Q: What are Koi?
A: Koi are ornamental domesticated varieties of the common carp Cyprinus carpio. They
are believed to have originated from Eastern Asia, Aral, Black and
Caspian Seas. The word "koi" comes from Japanese. The original Japanese
word koi simply means "carp," including both the dull grey fish and the brightly colored varieties. A homonym of koi
means 'love, affection' and koi are therefore symbols of love and
friendship in Japan. Koi have many different colors. Some of the major
colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. More information
about Koi can be found at Wikipedia.
Q: Do you have scavengers like snails and tapoles?
A: Yes, we have tons of big bullfrog tadpoles, and YES, WE HAVE SNAILS!
Q: How can I get rid of GREEN WATER?
A: There
are a couple ways to rid your water garden of green water...the best
recommendation that I have (and it is what I use) is to put an
ultraviolet light on your pond or also known as a UV. Keep in mind
that the UV bulb will need to be replaced about once per year. This
works perfect, though! You can also choose to treat your water garden
with chemicals. Chemicals, however, have been known to harm your fish
or plants, and must be used with great caution.
Q: How do I calculate the size of my pond?
A: Length x width x
depth (feet) x 7.5 (rectangle) 6.2(circle or odd shape) EXAMPLE:
If your pond is 10 feet by 8 feet and 18 inches deep and is rectangle,
it would be 10 x 8 x 1.5 (feet) x 7.5 = 900 gallons.
Q: How much do I need to feed my Koi?
A: If the water
teperature is less than 45 degrees, don't feed koi; 45-50 degrees feed
every other day; 50-60, once a day; above 60 feed your Koi 4-6 times a
day.
Q: My pond has foam on it and it kind of smells like a "fishy" smell - what's going on?
A: Summer is the perfect time for spawning.
Sometimes, spawning can cause a little foam on the top of the pond, and
it can even sometimes create an unpleasant odor - kind of fishy.
